The Pyramids of Giza

If you are planning to go on your holidays to Egypt you should know a few things about the most famous symbol of this ancient country. Built around 4500 years ago, the Pyramids of Giza are like a mystery that waits to be solved.

The Pyramids of Giza are large stone structures situated on a desert plateau nearby the Nile. These pyramids are actually tombs for the kings and their queens and it was very privilege thing to have a tomb. The people of ancient Egypt believed that the death actually means beginning of the new life, and because of that they embalmed the body of the King and he was buried inside the pyramid especially built for him. Believe or not, there are 93 pyramids in Egypt, but the most significant are three main pyramids in Giza: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure.

Pyramids of Gizah

The Great Pyramid is the largest, the tallest and the most preserved Pyramid in Egypt. The Great Pyramid represents one of the “Seven Wonders Of The World”, and it is the only of them which exist even today. It is about 140 m high, and for a long period it was the tallest building in the world. The Pyramid of Khufu is completely made of limestone and it is consisted of more then million blocks (the blocks weight from 2.5 tons to 15 tons!). The entrance in the Pyramid is located in the northern side, and it has actually two entrances. One of them is original and it is about 17 m above the ground, while the other one was made at force by Khalif El-Mamoun, who searched the hidden treasure. Today, visitors use the Mamoun’s entrance which is considered as the shortcut. The interior of the Pyramids contains number of corridors, tunnels and chambers. Truly, the great Pyramid of Khufu (also known as Pyramid) is a masterpiece.

Kheops Pyramid

The Pyramid of Khafre is the second Pyramid of Giza, it stands at the higher part of the plateau and it gives an impression that it is higher than the Great Pyramid, but it is 136 m high. Similar as the Great Pyramid, it has an entrance in the northern side. This Pyramid has no corridors which lead into the center of the pyramid. In the burial chamber, which is located underground, is found big, black sarcophagus.

The third and the smallest Pyramid of Giza is the Pyramid of Menkaure. It is 65m high, and it is supposed that is made a lot bigger than it was planned. It also has an entrance at the northern side, like the other two neighbor pyramids. The difference between the Menkaure`s Pyramid and the other two is in the in the stone, for this pyramid it was used the pink granite.

The Great Sphinx is also located at the Giza plateau and it is one of the most recognizable constructions in the world. It was built of the soft sandstone, and it was repaired few times. It is 60 m long and 20 m tall construction. Its face looks at the rising sun.
