El Castillo

Pre-Hispanic City of Chichen-Itza is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1988. There are many reasons for that. Chichen Itza was a central point in the northern Maya lowlands since the Late Classic until the Early Post Classic period.

The site is very rich with many different kinds of architectural styles. It includes a lot of stone buildings in different state of preservation. Some of them are successfully restored. Paved roads, called sacbeob, are connecting all buildings in Chichen Itza. There are several architectonic groups of buildings of Chichen Itza and three of them are the most important. The first one is the Great North Platform( includes the monuments of El Castillo, Temple of Warriors and the Great Ball Court), then The Ossario Group( includes a pyramid and the Temple of Xtoloc) and  third is the Central Group( includes the Caracol, Las Monjas, and Akab Dzib).

For more than a century, Chichen Itza is very important for Mexico as a tourist attraction. Ranked as the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico, it attracts many visitors from all over the world, and especially from the popular resort of Cancún which is nearby.

In 2007, Chichen Itza’s El Castillo was named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Since 2006, after a woman fell of one of the monuments and lost her life, monuments are closed to public access and visitors can only walk around them.

The ruins of Chichen Itza are maintained by Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia of Mexico and they are federal property.
