Carpathian Wooden Churches

Carpathian Wooden Churches are UNESCO World Heritage Site and are consisted of eight churches. To be precise, those eight wooden religious objects are built between 16th and 18th century in eight different places in Slovakia.
Carpathian Wooden Churches include two Roman Catholic churches, three Greek Catholic and three Protestant churches and one belfry in Hronsek.
Here are some basic information’s about each church:

Roman Catholic wooden church of St. Francis of Assisi in Hervartov is built in Gothic style in 15th century and it is oldest in Slovakia. It is very unusual because it is tall but narrow and the floor is made of stones instead of wood.

Roman Catholic Gothic church of All Saints in Tvrdošín is built in second half of 15th century, was modified in a Renaissance style in the 17th century. It is famous by its ceiling paintings with starry heaven and by its altar depicting All Saints.

The Protestant Church in Hronsek is 8m high and has a shape of cross with arms 23 and 18m long. It has motives of Scandinavian architecture which are unusual for the time the church was built.

Evangelical wooden church in Leštiny in the Orava region was finished in 1688 but the main altar is from 18th century. Famous Slovak poet Pavol Országh was baptized in this church.

Maybe the most beautiful of nine wooden churches is the church in Kežmarok. Built in 1717 it has fascinating interior, depict blue Heaven, 12 apostles, 4 evangelist and Hole trinity above the altar. After general restoration in 1990s services are again hold in this church.

Greek Catholic church of St. Nicholas in Bodružal was built in 1658. It is consisted of three square-shaped parts with 3 towers; the biggest one is with the bell. Altar was reconstructed in 1990s and the whole building was reconstructed in 2004. Until the middle of the 1990s the church was biritual (Greek Catholic and Eastern Orthodox services), today it belongs only to Greek Catholic Church.

Church of St. Nicholas in Ruská Bystrá was built in 18th century. It has two towers and its shape of the roof looks like the traditional houses of peasants. The interior has many religious artifacts.

Church of Archangel Michael in Ladomirová was built in 1742. It was built without a single nail and has the same design and look like church in Bodružal. It is Greek orthodox church.
